Stock 383 stroker

Post by Swampman84 » Tue Jan 30, 2018 7:22 am

Will a stock 383 with a 2.37 rotator have enough power for a 14x8 hamant hull family boat (4 people) to run dry ground?

It probably will but a lot of details missing.

Weight of passengers is a big piece if everyone is 225 plus that's going against you.

Rigging weight

Cargo and fuel

Prop selection is important some blades do better running dry than others. In general my experience with pushing heavy objects is wider blades work better.

Your stock 383 data would help as there are no stock 383 engines they are all worked 350s with a longer stroke or worked 400s with a shorter stroke. Cam, compression and heads all would lend to help with answer. If going off a guess of 400ft pounds torque and multiply through a 2.37 it's gonna be close. Dry grass and pack dirt I think your ok but green sticky grass loaded with 4 and fuel probably not reliably.

I think a 383 with a good 4 wide blade setup will work fine. Just keep empty boat weight down to less than 1800 lbs or so. 1500 would be better and try to get a good 400hp.

I mean, here is what a little 122 inch motor with a 2.38 and a 3 blade maximus at 76" does on summer Kissimmee grass at polluted waters. It has 0.420" thick uhmw on the hull, not a slick bottom.

Boat weighs 1730 lbs with no fuel, tools, gear or driver.

NO such animal, what do you mean by stock??? should be putting out at the least 400 hp, with alu, heads maybe 450hp, a wide 3 blade like a R ser, sensenich 80 inch would be a good prop. 4 blade only if you are turning 500+ hp My 14' jimmy white with 510hp 383 runs where ever with 3 people and full cooler!!!

Who makes the engine? Horsepower rating? Heads? A 383 with decent heads, a mild cam, good intake with at least a 750cfm holley or like carb should do pretty good and be around 450hp or more. Could one need more power, yes, will it work, yes, if I was buying or building a 383, 500hp would be the minimum I would shoot for. BUT if you needed an engine I would say LS all day.
