[quote="
The port matching that Rich refers to involves making sure the dimensions of the the intake manifold and head ports match up with the gasket cut out. This is a good move for any application and basically consists of some work with a burr grinder to taper the port edges to get a good match with the intake gasket and eliminate sharp transitions. Any sharp edge transition (larger to smaller or smaller to larger) will create flow issues that can increase pressure drop and create dead flow zones where liquid fuel accumulates.[/quote]

For this application, I agree, the only porting I would consider doing is a gasket match. I also think he made a good choice keeping the intake runners on the "small" side for a 408 inch engine, and a custom cam to maximize torque at a lower RPM. I experimented with a 383 SBC (small intake runners with a factory roller cam), and was happy with the results. I believe he is definately on the right track for a DD.

Gasket kit will be here tomorrow along with some other parts. I will check them against the ports and will match them up if there is a significant difference. Yeah the balancer is pretty trick! If you have a crank that needs weight added it will calculate the distance from centerline and modify what's required, even will split the weight 2 or 3 times to spread it out. Gets it spot on as you can see from the result screen.

More progress has been made today! Rings gapped, rods hung, pistons in the holes. Rotating assembly in for the final time. Oil pump and pickup on. Camshaft installed. Heads mocked up with 1.6 roller rockers to get a pushrod length. Should have it ready to go next week!

Did this thread die or is it in testing?
Not that it matters that I also thought a ford granada windsor had a chance on a airboat? About 20-30 years ago?

Waiting on the ARP head bolts. Just gasket matched the intake and painted over the weekend. Head intake ports are already good to go. Oil pan is painted. ARP stainless fasteners are also on their way. Should be done with the build by the end of the week hopefully. Spoke with Andrew at Water Walker today, ordered 2 new Signature Series blades since the ones I have are 16 and 12 years old and showing their age. Gonna talk to Mike Broadway at Competition Motorsports in Sarasota about putting it on his dyno to get real power numbers.

It's in progress. There's no reason it won't perform to the op's expectation. My Son has the same hull, with a DD 385" sbc and it runs great, even on the hill. This engine should make more power/torque on the low end, with a little less weight.

I'm getting ahead of the game, but when you get to the point of testing it on the boat, if it doesn't perform the way you expect, I'd be more than happy to lend you my Q prop off my Son's boat, it's tried and true on a DD, just a thought.

Thanks Cracker I appreciate the offer and will keep it in mind. My cousin has a 3 blade H off of his 470 conversion that I might try as well.

This is gonna work just fine for you and you may want to take him up on trying that Q prop. If your old 302 did the job then this 408 will be all smiles. More stroke, better heads, more lift at the valve and the same weight what is not to like!

Will the Q blades fit in the Water Walker hub?

My last setup was Q blades on WW hub, 72". All here for spare and available for testing too, without having to pull off another boat.
I grew up thinking I-10 was the Mason Dixon line.

The 72 Q two blade would be a very good test prop. A strong DD Caddy can whip up a 74 with quite a bit of pitch. Based on that I would guess your 408 and a 72 would come in around 1.5 mark for a starting point.

After 50 to 100 hours of run time things will loosen up and you should gain about 50rpm over time at the prop. That said I would set it at 2950 which gives you room to grow.

That would be a starting point. We run a 72" Q set on 1.75 on our iron head 385" sbc, and it spins 2800 on the trailer

Heads are bolted down. Cam is degreed in. Rockers are on. Still waiting on the ARP cam bolt and stainless fastener kit before the front cover can go on.

Did the cam install at it's true duration spec or did they grind it where it installs a few degrees retarded ?

Ground on 106 install at 102. We installed it straight up first and checked it at 93 so we retarded it 8 on the crank sprocket it ended up at 101.

IT'S DONE!!! Engine is assembled. Just need a couple of external parts like valve covers, water pump, alt brackets, etc. FiTech injection will come off the current setup. Spoke with the dyno man today. Will be hooking it up in 2 weeks to get some numbers. Told him what I had, he said he wouldn't be surprised if it made over 400 ft/lbs. of torque at 2800. Nothing could make me happier! Well maybe 500 ft/lbs. but then I'm dreaming lol.

I look forward to the dyno results! Add in results of a Q prop test and a whole bunch of us get redneck dyno runs on our motors!

What happened with this engine did you get it in the dyno or on your boat yet, curious how it performed?

Sorry, engine is done. Going to hopefully get it on the break in stand this week to run in the camshaft. Then need to get it to the dyno for some numbers. Life just gets in the way sometimes!
