Air filter size

What size air filter is everyone running on a SBC setup? Also, what do you have for rain protection or cover.

I have a 383. I run only a fire suppressor wire cage with a rain cover, made by GTO.

My fire suppressor is the diameter of the Holley carb intake and about 6 inches tall.

Go on YouTube n search air filters on dynos n u will see what 1 u want.. remember all a engine is ...is an air pump it wants air... I use 14x4 K&N with a filterwear cover I dont run in the rain but if I get caught in it I wait or if it's not to bad the filterwear will keep the rain out my breather nut has a rubber seal rain covers are silly looking to me imo

Rain covers might look silly to you, but I can run in the heavyest of rain.

Gotta be ready for anything DoDo

I tell Mr Branch to treat it like its an airplane. I have been out off the coast in the fall run net fishing and the wind and tide converge. Having to get us back across those open cuts between barrier islands if you drop power you gonna sink. We went to a fully enclosed Spectre air filter housing that also has 2 ram air style snorkels'. It uses a washable element, filters the air good and has proven effective in heavy weather.

If it is really bad and we have to push thru it I can even reach back and face the snorkel's to the rear to minimize water entry. The base has a small seam that prevents pooling and so far so good. I would recommend it.

About 5 years back met a young man (Ox Box folks) who had a hot car motor boat. He explained to me that they were having trouble with a conventional open filter pulling fuel out of the carb at high speed. They had fashioned a partially closed system to prevent that from happening. After running my boat I noticed a fuel film on the prop and discovered my boat was pulling fuel also so we went to a closed system first a Spectra dual rams horn style then later the current top mounted dual snorkel.

Use the standard height NOT LOW PROFILE if your engine is 350 inch or larger.

I have a piece of plastic the width of my filter in the back to keep fuel from being pulled out when racing

Krahammer your set up is the actual proper (USCG) standard for an inboard marine application, my issue is it offers no real degree of particulate filtration. The Spectre uses a washable filter just like a K&N and it does a good job for us. We run dry a lot being out on night rides and the amount of bugs and dirt it traps we would not want going into the cylinders.

Back in the late 1960s the performance cars were being built with Ram Air, Cowl Induction and Shaker Scoops for a reason. The speed or pressure of air being captured in a closed ducted system acts much like added "boost" that a supercharger adds. Now this was a very slight amount of pressure and higher speeds are where this works but to gain performance at zero cost is a win in any application.

We run a "Cadillac batwing" style cleaner on my Son's small block. Should he get caught in the rain, he can just spin the air cleaner 180 degrees so the intake duct faces the back. Not the best setup, but works fine.

Velocity stack. Tarp and bungies stay in the boat. On the trailer, I cover the motor, and then the whole metalwork from cage to gas pedal.
