4X8 Wood boat build.

Postby Gg Kustomz » Sun Sep 22, 2013 9:18 pm

Here are some pic's of the 4x8 I am building. I bought the plans from Lake buggy Airboats. The motor is the Predator 13hp from HF. I used all EMT tubing for the metal work and the prop is a 42x14. So thats pretty much all for the moment. Been fun so far.

Sure will! I know that weight will be an issue so trying to keep as light as possible and still look cool. If it get's to heavy I might look for a small rotax motor. But will see how the 13hp does first.

I built one for my kids in 1985 had a 10 hp b/s arrow prop. 4x8 1/4 plywood later found out 5x8 work better 125 lb.planed good in 3ft.of water . you did a great job with the wood .looks great. keep posting pic.

Not sure yet on the galv. I guess it depends on how it handle's and if I go with a bigger motor. I am building this little boat not expecting much performance. But it would be cool to be able to slide around and get up to like 30mhp. I know a guy with a 447 rotax with a built in gear reduction drive that might make it perform the whey I want. But I haven't even tried what I got yet so maybe one step at a time.lol

This Predator is an Electric start 13hp 3,600rpm motor. I am thinking with the prop only being a 42x14 it will lug just enough to put me in the 2,800 to 3,000 range? I think on the rudders I would like to build 2 and use conduit for the steering linkage. I hope tomorrow I can roll some tube for the prop guard and maybe get her into the flooded lot next to me. Could some body give me the 101 on rolling tube. Not sure where to pull the measurement on the tube to start the roll?

Thanks for the replies guy's! I am trying to build the cage with the tube roller I bought from HF. I have been wanting to learn how to use that tool for a while. Oh well 1/2 emt is cheap enough for a learning curve and thats how I learn the best.

I like it! I would like to give my wood hull a chance but ive already got a smaller fiberglass hull to go under my rigging. Keep up the good work before long itll start looking more and more like an airboat!

I built an eight ft. wood boat and put a vw on it ran great, a little spooky slowin down but ran great on plane. Will post some pics as soon as I figure out how to do that. Also built some RC airboats with gas engines on them swingin a 20x10 prop, runs the hill and alot of fun. I used to work for Dick Hoffman, and my family has been involved wityh airboating since I can remember. my uncle Bud Bradshaw built headers and rudders, before he became ill and closed his shop in Lake Panasoffkee, he passed a few years back, and I know he's slidin with the best now, may the legends ride on !!!!

Thanks guy's. I found a really good deal on a 4a032 new still in the crate. The military are getting rid of them after sitting unopened in a crate for 30 yrs. I have read that they are capable of 30hp with a couple of small mods. Has anybody used one of these motors for a mini? If so can you please let me know how it performed. Thanks
