Soldiers Letter and update

Postby buckshotbob » Sun Feb 03, 2008 1:02 pm

This letter we jus received from our son in Iraq. I thought you all would be interested. He also put a link at the bottom of the letter. It shows a mission he was on. Unfortunatly he is not in any of the pictures, although some of the guys you see in the pictures will be receiving the donated goods that you all sent off from "Operation Airboat III". He is looking forward to the packages. He told me they may not get them right away because they need air support when the guys go get the mail and they haven't had any lately. Were they are is kinda remote - no px - so the items sent will be much needed and wanted and appreciated! He gets R&R in March (hopefully) and he says he would like to come down and meet you guys. We will post his letters when he sends them and hopefully pictures of them with the magazines and other goodies.

Hello all! It's been a very long time since I've had the chance to sit down and type up another mass email.. or really any email at that. Honestly, I don't have the time now either but I really wanted to get a quick hello out. I know many of you have been asking for pictures and I'm sorry that I haven't been able to get any sent off (I'm still working on that). The link below is from a website that covers the military. I haven't looked through it myself yet so I'm not sure what you'll find there. It won't be anything grousome I'm sure. We had a combat camrea guy with us and a writer from NPR. I'm not in any of the photos but the rest of the guys in it are from our platoon. Apparently the camera guy liked our platoon leader (Robert Shultz).. or maybe he's just very photogenic. In one of the photos you see a few guys sitting down in front of a house- I was on top of the roof providing security. The cache of weapons you see in one of the pictures and the motorcycle were blown up and I have video of it. The mission didn't go so well. 3 Soldiers were killed and a couple more seriously wounded. So it goes..

I am doing well, as is the rest of the platoon. Things have been very busy around here, but I guess that is to be expected. I think we'd all laugh at doctor's work week though. Somehow there seems to be 26 hours a day here and we manage to work every minute of it. We are making an impression in the local community. I've been told twice now about some of the kids asking for me by name when we stop on patrol at a frequent stop and I'm not around. I have a friend or two it seems. I've heard other local kids ask for guys from other platoons too.

The people are setting up a type of "community watch" group and starting to try and fix things themselves, with our support. A few of us like to support the local economy by buying candy bars at some of the stores. Good stuff... I think most of it is from Turkey and some from Germany.

There's much more to tell and I would like to stay and type, but I have other things that need to be taken care of. I hope everything is well back in the states. Goodluck with those of you in school. I'll be home soon for leave, hopefully I can catch up with some of you then.

-Robert

OUR SONS & DAUGHTERS ARE AWESOME

Postby lostcracker2 » Sun Feb 03, 2008 3:32 pm

Great letter from your son, we all need to be proud of our extended family sons and daughter. If we did not have hero's like them today where will be be tomorrow? Meet you and your wife @operation III and talk about my son in N.C. ( pilot mtn. ) that wanted to serve his Country again, but they would not take him because of his hearing. I hope you have a long and prosperous life together again as I did with mine, before she went home to be with the father. Hope to meet up again on the water or in the air. LOSTCRACKER2

Just talked to Robert, by istant messanger - sometimes it works for him. He said to tell everyone they received one of the boxes. Had magazines, beef jerky, and other goodies. Hopefully he will get some pics and I'll share. I'm sure they are excited to get the one package. I told him to keep his eyes open for the others and the Girl Scout Cookies. I'll keep you all updated. Again he said thanks for everything. I gave him this site and hopefully he can get on.
