Aircraft vs. Automotive?

Post by zola049 » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:00 pm

Need advice of which way to go. this sounds like a topic that would have been discussed already. a link to previous threads would be fine also! thanks. got a small aluminum boat, w/ stainless on the bottom. about 12ft by 6.5. had a franklin on it before i got it. thanks again!

From what I gather most folks on this site don't care one way or the other so probably no old threads to read... :D

lil gpu and you will be good to go, strip that stainless off and put on aluminum with poly over it and that lil 4 or 6 cyl aircraft or gpu will run that thing anywhere you need, water optional.

I am a car motor guy but it sounds like you
have a glades style rock boat. With that I would
definitely go aircraft.
As far as folks not caring on here about car
motors or aircraft well that's another story.
Like oil and water.Probably 100 posts on it.

I dont care if its a waterpumper or not, as long as I can run dry and it will bring me home Ill run it, if it breaks Ill fix it, if I cant figure out how to fix it Ill find someone who can and learn from them. Thats 50 % of airboating the rest is showing someone how to fix it when it breaks and lending a hand when its needed.

With a narrow 12ft hull, no doubt a 4 banger A/C motor!

Find something other than a pe 60 or 90 unless its a stout conversion, it just will not have the power for that boat, look for a 150 or bigger and it should make a great boat just remember to keep the weight down.

Thanks for all the help. im new to all this but have been told by most locals that i do have the glades "rock boat" set up. for that reason i have been old to leave the stainless. is that going to make running dry more difficult? as for the engine...ive looked around and it seems like those continental 220 gpu's are easy to come by and pretty affordable compared to the lycoming's like the 0360 mentioned above. i'd like to make a good investment but cant break the bank either! how much lighter are they than the automotive engines? would automotive be completely out of the question? im gonna mainly use it to hunt and will only ride w/ another person and a cooler. not gonna really be much of a cruising boat. keepthe good info coming and thanks again!

that hull is just to small for an automotive engine, the boat would be to tipsy. being that the hull is that narrow it will probably be tipsy reguardless of any motor. but and 0360 and up would be a great motor for that boat. being that you want to hunt the boat i would keep it as light as possible and remove the stainless bottom and put on polymere.

220's are easy to find and fairly reasonable, planty of parts availible also. they are a reliable motor and will last for years if set up right. I have seen people beet the crap out of these motors and they still run for years.
