You can run a regular automotive battery, a cranking marine battery, or a gel cell. The gels hold up to the vibration probably the best. The marine have both post and high cranking amps. The regular automotive batteries work good. You can get them in many price ranges with high cranking amps and long warranties. Everyone has there option. I have ran a dual terminal 75 red top optima for 4 1/2 years. My battery sits on the bottom of my boat, it doesn't have a tray or box(it takes a beating from the hill).
Hope this helps.

If you don't run a alternator you may want to run a deep cycle.

Northstar AGM (absorbent glass matt) class 27. Not totally necessary if only using it for starting purposes.

I would use a marine cranking battery from Interstate or Sears. Personally use 2 of 'em with a Perko switch in between. Deep cycle and gel cell batteries will not produce as many amps for the dollar. If you have a high compression aircraft engine with large cylinder bores, you might need the extra oomph to start after running just the lights for an hour or two.

I run a Braille 21lb 1380 cranking amps for the first 5sec of cranking. Gator hunted the last 3 weeks and still strong. Had it for around 6 months and no problems yet. It's dry cell agm if I'm not mistaken.
