Paint or gel coat inside glass hull?

Postby CypressHunter » Sun Apr 23, 2017 8:07 pm

Getting ready to do some glass work and want to redo the inside of my hull. Should I gel coat or paint it?

If you are trying to get a mirror smooth coat on the outside of a boat, it is very difficult or impossible to brush or roll gel and accomplish it.

If you are trying to get a slight texture with some contrasting splatter on the inside of a boat, brush and rolled gel works great.

When you splatter, stand back 5' or so from what you are splattering. It turns out better.

Without a sprayer, you can use a paint brush. Just get a contrasting color. Get A LITTLE on the brush. Stand about 5' away from where you want the splatter to land and "shake" the brush at it.

Try it on some cardboard first. Just takes a minute to get a feel for it.

Easy and looks good.

Can you thin gel coat to spray with a paint spray gun?

If you want a taxture use a roller for texturing paint. When i made a deck for an old boat it was still slipery with a texture on when wet.

:rebel: They have stuff called webbing solution that you mix with your desired color gelcoat, set your air gun on low pressure and test on wood or what ever to get your desired affect by adjusting the air pressure and distance from project. :rebel: I found that US COMPOSITES WAS ABOUT THE CHEAPEST PLACE TO ORDER FROM ( OH YOU NEED THE WAX ADDITIVE ALSO)

If I go as far as removing the T rail can I re-rivet it back in place with a hand riveter from Harbor Freight?

Yes you can re-rivet it. As for spraying gel, you can spray from a gravity fed gun. I use this el-cheapo from HF. It sprays gel fine. You can also use it to spray your webbing, I geled and webbed one today. No reason to add wax to your webbing/gel mix(50/50), just mix it hot (8-10cc per pint) and spray it within 4 hours of spraying your gel coat base (which should have wax in it).

How big of a compressor do you need to spray? I currently don't have one but have access to a smaller size compressor

You don't need much, 1.5hp/6 gallon compressor would probably do. Just need a regulator either on the gun or on the compressor to knock the pressure down around 40-50 psi. I do recommend hitting your existing gel coat with sandpaper and/or acetone to get the wax off so it will adhere better. I've not done that to the wax plenty of times though and it turned out airboat-good enough.

I did that to my first boat I ever had. an aluminum 1956 StarCraft. That was 20 years ago. I gave the hull to my neighbor about 10 years ago. Still a good hull rivet on the top rail are still tight.

My question was is one of the hand riveters from HF a good enough tool to get the job done? As what kind of rivets should I use?

Look for this number and you should be able to find the rest 97524A040

Open the page and go to rivits then rivits for the selection page. Great site for hardware.

How much gel coat does it take to do the inside of a 13 ft hull? Not sure if I need a whole gallon or just a quart or two. I've been told to do it thin
