Expansion Tank ?

Postby BlewbayouLA » Mon May 15, 2017 12:21 pm

Redoing my 500 caddy build. Decided to strip the chrome off the expansion tank and it pretty much fell apart. Looking for what I can use as a replacement does anybody have something in mind, and where to purchase. Image

I run a Caddy and got my tank from AlumiTec but it looks nothing like your configuration.

That's a custom so if you want a direct replacement take it to your local radiator or fab shop and have them copy your old one.

Expansion Tank ?

What about using a thermostat housing with cap and burp line and a catch Tank. I think this would give more flow and less restrictions.

Not literally, but that is basically how I have mine plumbed.

If what you are proposing:
1) doesn't impede coolant flow out of the engine,
2) places the filler neck at the highest point in the system, and
3) has the vent tube going to an overflow tank that holds about a quart,
there's no reason I'm aware of that it shouldn't work (with a good functioning cap).

During normal operation on a hot day, mine may displace just about half that.

Hey, I know that engine . . . lived on Witchy's then current boat.
No doubt, that post was Smuggler's. .. :)

Don't know why that wouldn't work. Probably have to give it a little hole spreading massage though,
unless Moroso is now making such a critter to fit a 5200 block. Maybe they do, I never hunted one.

I personally never ran one on my caddy never had a problem. If I filled it all the way, it would blow off a little water the 1st time I ran it then stay at that level. I also ran a dual pass radiator and the proper restrictor. Motor ran 160 maybe 170 when running hard.

If you look back in smugger's pics ( in the Cadillac Part Album) he made an Aluminum caddy fill neck at one point.
