Steering connecting rod for bell crank steering

Postby CypressHunter » Fri Jul 28, 2017 5:48 pm

I want to make a new connecting rod that goes from my steering rod to my bell crank. It appears to me that whoever made it before just blazed a bolt into the end of 1/2 conduit to screw a heim joint on. The 1/2 is just too flimsy. Either way I need to know what kind of bolt is safe to braze. From so research I have read it looks like I need an A307 plain steel bolt. What is safe to braze with getting all the toxic fumes

I used a 1/2" EMT with the brazed on bolts and sleeved with 3/4" EMT.

Define sleeve... did you just slide it inside the 3/4 in? Or secure it some how?

You slide the 3/4 over the 1/2", leaving some of the 1/2" exposed, and brazing it to seal the ends.

If you take standard zinc hardware and soak them in a little muriatic acid, it will eat the zinc coating off instantly. Fresh clean weldable steel is what is left. Whenever I have to weld a nut to a bracket that's what I do. No funny arcing or fumes. Just make sure to rinse thoroughly before welding.

That's what I have now but the 1/2 conduit is flimsy and has too much play for my liking
