Rudder Coated with Bed Liner
Rudder Coated with Bed Liner
I have had great luck with bed liner on other projects. Do you believe that spray on bed liner would create enough drag to hurt the boats performance?

Re: Rudder Coated with Bed Liner
I had to do some bodywork on my rudders and need to paint them. Bed liner would cover my mediocore bodywork skills better than paint. I am just concerned that the texture may create drag. I hope it would be so miner that I wouldn't notice. Looking for some advice.

Spend more time on body work and paint. It will look a whole lot better and you don't have to worry about drag.

I tend to agree, that wouldn't be my first choice either. However to answer your question . . .
Standard Disclaimer: If you have 5' rudders on an under powered mini,
or are putting a gallon on each rudder to create a knock down effect . . . . well, you know . . .
I do not believe the performance penalty would be measurably noticeable, though. Compared to other causes of puny performance, I wouldn't consider it as a source of heartburn until after everything else was perfect. 1/4" smaller squares on your cage wire would probably make a bigger difference.jrowan wrote:. . . I'm just hoping to create a durable surface without hurting performance to much. Thanks Deano! I've picked up a lot of valuable information from your comments in the past so I'm very grateful that you took the time to answer my post.

Re: Rudder Coated with Bed Liner
Another thought, the demples in a golf ball reduces drag and allows the ball to travel futher, could the bed liner have the same effect on a rudder?

Re: Rudder Coated with Bed Liner
Have you thought about putting a little colored dye in some fiberglass and spraying or rolling it on the rudders. It would be slick after you sanded and buffed it. Or , what about polyurethane in something that would make them look like wood and be harder than a rock and slicker than snot.LOL Just some thoughts. But I have to agree with the above post to get better with your body work.LOL
Re: Rudder Coated with Bed Liner
I went back over the rudder with Bondoglass, sanded and painted. Smoothed them out nicely. Thanks

Cut them in half, then put them back together with flex tape!
