Oil leaking around exhaust gasket

Postby wrongturn » Wed Jan 03, 2018 6:58 pm

Was running my 540 all weekend and the last evening it started missing when I would give it gas and as night went on the miss became consistent when I got back to camp I noticed oil leaking around exhaust gasket Any suggestions as to what the problem could be?

I'd be thinking it's the cylinder needing rebuild. I've got a project that is doing the same thing. It got alot worse with colder weather. Oh well, something else to do when it warms up

I was thinking a cracked cylinder or valve guide?

My 2 cylinders are pretty much dead until they warm up. @ cooler temps will blow oil until warm then will blow a puff of smoke and open on up. I was thinking rings at the least. Anyway I'm going to pull the cylinders & do a differental compression check on the others. Unless you have lost fire to both plugs(unlikely) , bent a push rod or cam going bad-there is not much you can do without pulling the jug. I know thats not what you wanted to hear.

That’s what I thought too just figured I’d ask to see if there might be something else I’m going to do a leak down and go from there

For fouling.. When the plugs foul, the cylinders turn into an oil pump and will push that oil out through the exhaust, and if the gaskets aren't perfect, it'll make its way out on to the headers.
