Re: Synthetic Oil for Lycomings
Speaking only about Aeroshell 15W50 oil if you want a flat camshaft ,rust pitted lifters and pistons that resemble a loufa sponge then by all means use the oil .If however you want your camshaft remain in great shape and the pistons to last ,run Aeroshell or equivalent straight weight oil AD oil or Mineral oil. The pistons from using 15w50 oil coming into our overhaul shop, show rejectable amount of dis-similar corrosion in the piston pin area.and the camshafts (especially in Lycomings ) spall and pitt more than engines running on other AD oils.

You can only use an aviation blend of mineral and synthetic if you run avgas. The 100 % synthetics will not disperse the lead compounds left over from combustion. Do not run anything but aviation oil or you will have a problem with deposits in the combustion chamber.

At tear down is where most of the problems presented themselves. The only exceptions are engines flown with high usage , like in flight instruction or flying schools. I only present a mechanics view of the oils destructive nature on aircraft engines.
