Can a boat be powder coated with poly on it?

Are you dead set on powder coat? I've powder coated a few boats and won't ever do another hull.

The clear on the powder coat can't be buffed out like on a regular paint job so it lost its luster quickly from normal use. Any searches or chips in the paint couldn't be re-powder coated, had to try and paint match and blend which sucks. And powder wants to build up around edges like bolt holes, so you have to be real careful assembling or you can pop the powder loose around the bolt hole. Called the faraday cage effect. Makes it difficult to get powder into recessed and pocket areas as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'd powder accessory parts, even rudders...just not a hull or grass rake unless the rake was tubing.

Michael Faraday was noted for his work with Electrical Capacitance. Capacitors are rated in Farads and certain shielding schemes in electronics are named after him. That is specifically a Faraday Shield around an electron tube. Shields tubes from interacting with each other when placed in close proximity to each other as is the case in radio and electronics chassis. Also Faraday Screening for rooms where stray signals are prevented from being broadcast outside the room by stray inductance or inductance of the physical properties of the cabling & etc, of and in the room and equipment.

Now to the point. I do not know the technology behind Powder Coating. Is the powder applied under a static electricity charge to draw it to the piece being coated? I know lots of appliances and specifically office and restaurant equipment is coated with an electrical charge. If this is the case then I can come close to understanding why the reference to a Faraday Cage Effect. I am old but never to old to learn something new. This caught my attention and my interest.

Yes bear it is, just google Powder Coat like you may have done for Faraday Cage Effect and it'll lay it all out there on the interwebs :)

Thanks Shane. Frequently when i comment I don't have time at the moment to go look something up. However I did spend some time just now and am gratified I was thinking correctly. Love the way we share info here on SA ! Hope it never changes.

Im not to worried about having a show boat but since i was doing a poly job and how cheap it is to powder coat the boat i figured i would since its all apart and doing upgrades like the rake, walkboards, cage gussets.

Like Tony said Farmboy's boat is powder coated and looks awesome! I do know he keeps it clean and keeps it in a inclosed shop so I'm sure that helps with it not fading out. But I've noticed you don't see any scratches in it or dings in it so it must hold up pretty good cause he rides damn near every weekend.

My whole boat is powder coated and so far still looks good! Like Quick said I do keep it inside a shop and I always keep it clean so I'm sure that helps a lot. If I had to do all over again I would powder coat the hull but not the metal work. Nothing against the powder coat but if you brake a bar or wire the re-welding burns the hell out of it. As to if it where stainless you can fix or add stuff and you hardly can tell... But other than that I do run my boat a lot and so far it's held up great!
