OK, here's the project ....

Any of y'all that have been around this forum for any time at all will know that I'm a big fan of clean, simple boats. The Cirrus radios, the GPS's .... they all have their place, bu mostlyt in the cab of a Volvo truck tractor, not on an airboat IMO.

Here's the challenge. I have one more boat left in me, and I will power it DD .... whether that'll be A/C or car motor is up for discussion. Right now my thinking is a hull around 13' x 7'6 ..... only two seats .... light everything .... single battery. I don't want the weight or the expense of a gearbox or a belt drive, and I could give two hoots in a holler about runnin dry ground.

What engine would you use??

If you could see your way clear to drop down to a 12 foot hull. I always liked a 0360 lycoming. Either carbed or injected. Plenty of power and reasonable on fuel

Ken, I love my Lycoming 0-360. However, if I was to go w/ a bigger boat 12' plus, I would go w/ Lycoming 0-540. Talk w/ Charlie he's got a War Daddy w/ poly & an 0540.

If light is the goal, I think it's hard to beat a light glass hull with an 0360. If you don't mind the extra weight and want the ease of pump gas and buying parts at the local store, a DD Cadillac is hard to beat

An injected 0360, or maybe an AV200? Goin' to 12' would be no problem at all because granny and I don't need to launch or retrieve anything heavy, but we'd definitely like enough room for an Igloo cooler bungee'd to the front of the riggin.

I've been on Thunder's ass for several years now to come up with a bolt-on thrust plate for those LS motors that he's building, but so far nothing to report there, and I've run an iron block DD before. Just trying to get light and not get expensive.

Ken you know I love the big Buick engines they have the same HP as a Caddy and are a bit lighter. Problem with thise things they are from a dead end production line. Not everyone can still work on them and they can be hard to find if ya break a block. probably not the best idea for your last boat. I have looked hard at them thinking this might be my last airboat but reality sets in and I nix both them and the Caddy primarily because of weight. Both develop decent performance and performance is not the problem I have with either of them. It boils down to weight.

I have had several aircraft and a GPU over the years and of all them the NEW PE30 90 HP was a darling but it was in all reality a single person boat. My O360 AV200 Was a power house for what it was. On a different hull, like you said a light fiber glass hull 12-13' both would make a stable boat. The trick with these things is to get a good run out with time still remaining. Rick has a contact that can find them for ya. He got one sweet deal on his O470 which is also a decent motor. Failing a factory engine that is just a run out, You can have a built engine but damned sure stick with someone the quality of Speed Wheely and there are a few others but not many. I am not a fan of built engines but some have great results. Rick has been running his run out 470 for quite a few years now and it still gets him around. Maybe thats an option as well, I know they are good solid engines but then you are back into the bigger and heavier bracket.

For your described boat, I say an O360 180 or AV200 run out with time remaining on a light fibreglass hull 12-13' would be a really fine combination. I just don't see how it could be beat for your stated purpose. Live with the AV Gas its worth the dollars. :thumbleft: For your stated purpose.

Ken this boat is close to what you described. Simple, clean, light and able to go get up under the shade when needed.
Not my boat, but its a great example. Plus Bobby can make those hulls strong & lightweight.

2013 12'Predator BRAND NEW JERNIGAN 200 HP -Boat is very very clean and will go wherever you want to go with 3 people.

What your describing is what Don Davis has built for years. It would run good with a 0360 but would run better with a 0540 or 0470 even a 0520. Don't be scared of the fuel burn on the 6 cylinders. If you go light and keep your foot out of the gas they can be economical to run. If you let it eat it will.

for just a ride around boat, a 350 chevy works pretty well. it is cheap to work on, easy on gas. smooth. they work well on a 13 foot boat. I think they work better on a 13 wide boat vs a smaller narrower boat. JMo

Hey Ken, sounds like your ready to pull the Trigger on a new ride. A 12x7.6 is probably the perfect size boat for a AV200. But if you were looking for a little more room I'm sure you could stretch it out a little. I would have a 12.6x7.6 ultra lite hull built. Hamant, Alumatech, Diamondback, all build Awesome ultra lite Hulls. And I bet that 200 Lycoming wouldn't even know that extra 6 inches in length was even there. He!!, It may even ride better being a tad longer. It would run dry with ease even though you said it was not necessary. Sorry, I'm not trying Pi$$ off the guys that suggest a fiberglass Hull. That would be fine too. But ken said this was his last boat. I hope he has a lot of good air boating years left. And A fiberglass Hull just doesn't have the same longevity as an aluminum Hull. I have owned both over years and they both ride and perform well. But for a last boat build I would go Aluminum.

Dam wish I had a picture of this boat that used to come to orange lake very often it was a guy from ocala he had a small maybe 12 ft hull with a 4 cylinder ac engine and it was the best. It was real fast go anywhere type of boat I believe someone said it was a 200hp 4 cylinder quiet clean sounded so clean I am pissed I never ask him about it I would havebought Iit in a snap. Sounds like your dream boat too.

Olf Art I'am with you on the DD LS !!! A mild LS fuel injection would be awesome all the way around with a light set-up, if Dave would set you up with the thrust plate :thumbleft:

Wow!! Thanks everybody for the fine input! I've pretty much decided on an aluminum hull, and unlike my last stainless rigged boat, I think I want to try powder coated mild steel. They're just pretty. I don't want poly .... my son can put that on after I'm gone if he wants .... but just a good coat of steelflex will do for now. I can't get my head around punching holes in a brand new hull. and besides, I don't do dry. I'm strictly a thin water guy when I can, but I've also served my time in deep water too if I have to.

I appreciate all your comments .... this little boat is starting to take shape already. :)

I need to touch base with Mr. Jurnigan again anyway .... haven't talked to him or the Mrs. since we paid them for that engine rebuild and mufflers for Bud's boat. I'll see about what an AV200 would run nowadays. :glasses7:

Idk if it's too much $ or not but there is a new 0540 in the classifieds complete new motor, console with gauges, all wiring, exhaust, motor stand, prop everything for 12k ready to run.

Well, that said I like my io470 run out. It has done very well for me for at a price I was willing/able to spend. If I were to build a new boat tomorrow and financially able, I would love to try the ecotec system out. The way it works out that I see is less money up front for my current rig but higher fuel cost each time I take the boat out. Whereas an ecotec would cost more build but may pay off if the boat gets many hours of use. Yes I would be willing to risk the newness of the ecotec .

As much as I love LS engines, if I were going to build a light boat, I would go with what a lot of other people are saying and go with an 0360 its a bad ass engine, I have an 0320 on my Little boat that I have at Lake O and its a great little motor but its aint an 0360 by no means

Go with the 180 or 200 if you are not worried about the finances. The horsepower will be there should you need it and for the resale value.

Think about an 0-320 160hp. $$ is less than a 180 or a 2 hunnert. Fuel consumption is less. Of course it will not burn the hill or hunt the woods but will do fine on a 13'6 "Lazer".

Ken, if it were my turn for a new boat, I'd be leaning toward a s/v 180 on lite in-line two-seat rigging.

I don't want to be pushin & pulling on a heavy boat as I get older and I can almost guarantee I'm still gonna be gettin stuck everything now & then :)
