Zone 4 Airboating.... Worth it?

Post by In the Glades » Tue Jul 28, 2015 1:58 pm

Looks like the closure is lifted as of this coming Friday.

Is it worth getting an ORV sticker to go out there?

Gotta stay on the designated trails.

I'm wondering how much water is out there, would like to ride with someone.
I think I need to renew my ORV sticker, that's a bummer going out to Ochopee !

Are all of the green primaries from Mitchell's airboat trails or are they airboat and buggy?

Seems like a decent amount of riding even staying on the primary trails.

Hows the rock situation down there?

I think its airboats only and if the water is up for them to open it up we shouldn't hit any rocks on the trail 8)

airboats only combing out of Mitchel's
Paces dike will allow both once the NPS approves the trails we asked for
but that is only practical for airboats during real high water

if anyone does go for a ride south of the Loop(zone 4 as the NPS calls it stop in at Pinecrest where the gas pumps are and see if Dave Ballman is well enough to go for a ride Carol asked that we stop in and at least make him walk around a little whenever we go out

Went by there today. Did a little work at the club. Mitchel's had a padlock on the gate.
Carol's suv was not there so I didn't stop.

You have to buy a sticker to get in Mitchells now and then they give you combination

You know that angers me some. first they take away the access then they make the campground a fee type campsground, now they lock the gates. I guess no more picnics for the general public much less parking in their to push apoleboat like Tom Ball used to do

Along with the 100 dollar sticker you have to look at a power point presentation and get a off road license. Not a big deal just something else you have to have. There is plenty to see if you want to ride and I'm glad I bought a sticker a couple years ago. Heard about the great frogging so I tried it. You have to be done by 10 but I still wanted to see. I will not be getting another sticker.

You have to sit through a similar presentation to drive on the beach in NC, I've done it a bunch of times before.

Sounds like its worth getting the sticker to check it out a couple times. Thanks guys

Its a nice ride just can't get to the really good spots anymore. but to me its one of the nicest areas in the Cypress. You don't need a stainless bottom to run anymore since the NPS implemented the designated trails but watch the rocks and for the NPS if you do go off trail. Its worth getting the sticker just for the ride and views and we have about 60 more miles of trails groundtruthed and just waiting on the NPS to follow through they were already approved a few years back and then put on hold. If you like quiet it sure is quiet out there that was the first area of the Cypress restricted to designated trails and airboaters have dropped ever since.
