New Airboat

Post by robertb4wd »

After hunting in South Texas a few times, I've decided to get a new airboat. I never realized there was so much information out there. I wanted something to carry a couple of guys (me and a friend) and my gear. I ended up purchasing a Dragonfly. They had a boat built on hand that seemed to fit what I was wanting and made me deal on it. I'll post some more pics when I return from Florida in a couple of weeks with the boat. I'm having them add a couple of things is why it won't be ready for a couple of weeks.

Sharp little boat. Congrats.

Deano not sure if you have been out looking but I stopped by Pemberton and he was building them and the one I was looking at had a Suzuki power plant. It was a neat build.

It's a Suzuki 1300cc. I talked with Pemberton again today and the seat I'm waiting on is in the works. We also talked about a turbo for this engine. I'm going to pick up the boat a run it as is for learning purposes, but the turbo will be purchased and on standby to install. He has to order the turbo kit and it takes a few weeks to get in so I'll just have him ship it to me. As soon as I get some run time I'll be happy to post a full review and give everyone an update on how it performs. I'll have some buddies with me that run airboats so I will have some good opinions and comments from them.

Well, I got it home. Getting a new gauge panel cut and adding some lights. Hopefully hit the water in a few days. Also waiting on the turbo kit to come in. I might be asking for some help to re-pitch the prop when the turbo gets here. I'm also posting a pic of the new layout for the switches, gauges, and gps.

Sitting at an idle, you pretty much hear just the gearbox. When you run up to 6k rpm's it makes some noise. Send me your number and I'll send you some videos. To say the least, I'm very impressed so far. The turbo kit should be in next week. It runs very good right now, but the turbo will make it even better.

I've been interested in Dragonfly boats for a few years. It looks like your build is the aluminum one? Maybe has polymer? I'm curious about one thing. What cruise speed and top end speed does it get with the Suzuki and say two passengers and an average load of say an extra 100 lbs?

It is the 15'4" aluminum hull with 1/4" polymer. Not sure on an average speed yet, we were just running thick grass most of the time. I did run up to 45mph (gps) in open water at one point.

I can honestly say, the boat does everything Pemberton said it would do.
