Buzzkill getting over hauled

Postby JPerkins323 » Sat Aug 08, 2015 4:04 pm

Every one seems to enjoy a thread like this so figured I'd share with every one. The cage on buzzkill started rusting out so I decided to redo the cage. Didn't really want to but it never happens when your ready so I'm rolling with it. Here's what I've done so far. Doing more fabrication then I'm used to but I'm getting the hang of it. Wish I could take credit for the cage it's self but I had a friend do it. I'll be going with a totally new paint scheme too. I'll be updating pictures as I go. ImageImageImage

With the new rigging drill a small hole at the base of the vertical legs on the stern side so the moisture has a place to escape. After every ride/wash stick the WD-40 straw inside the hole and shoot some WD up there. The new rigging shouldn't rust if you do that.

From the pictures I would say Wayne is his friend. The welds will be 100 percent and no moisture can enter. Nice boat.

Well almost ready to put the wire on the cage. Mounted the seats yesterday and finished up all the brackets for the nav lights. Drilled out some washers and braised them to the cage and mounted marine live well lights for the nav lights. There a little by of a learning curve for me but it's going good just taking it slow. Now I need to make a battery box. Trying to decide how to mount it. Any body have some pictures of there battery boxes?

Waiting for metal to come in for my hull, and the cage is still at powder coating so I'm at a stop for now. I've had this idea in my mind for a while so I decided to order some cork handles that were ment for fishing rode builders, and got some Paracord. It's my second wrap. First one was horrendous. Lol. But it keeps me entertained until all my stuff comes in.

Exhaust back from Hot Shots ceramic coatings.... Turned out good. As always I can't help but go a little overboard on this rebuild. Now if I can just get my hull painted I can finally start putting everything back together.

Very nice work. I like that cork handle idea. I was thinking about cutting up some alum. on the lathe with the radius cutter.

Nothing like fresh steel flex. Inside is all ready painted and one I finish bucking a few rivets, hopefully I'll get it out for outside paint this week. After that it's just assembly.

X2 for BoeShield. Corrosion X is also an excellent choice.
It has always amazed me that WD-40 is still so widely recognized as the "good stuff"
Fact is...It is not a lubricant it is a solvent. Tested a bunch of stuff on a lubricity tester several years ago in aviation school.
Basically it is an electric motor with a hardened wheel and a hardened wear plate on a torque wrench lever arm.
Turn it on, note the load, and measure the amp draw to keep the motor turning, and the squeal that a poor lube would make was deafening.
So we would squirt the bearing area, lean on the wrench, read the amp load, listen to the squeal or lack of, to determine the quality of the lube.

We ran that thing with a 20-30lb load and shot it with a CONSTANT stream of WD-40 right at the friction point and all it did was Smoke, SCREAM and bring the motor to a final friction induced halt!!!
One tiny squirt of LPS 2 and the thing started moving, went silent, and after hanging my 160lbs on the wrench still couldn't slow it down or get more than a minimal amp load.

Only reason for this long explanation was to explain myself better than to simply say..."WD-40 Sucks!"
