Gear Reduction

What's the best gear oil to run in your reduction and what's the best way to find out what ratio you are running ??

what type of box bubba?and is it under warranty?
Ok the gear box i ran was a 2.12 rotator took that thick oil out that rotator says use its like honey and i changed to royal purple the thinner of the 2 weights and freed up about 100-200 rpm in snap as they would say.
And to findout on a rotator is in serial #number on the box at bottom right if im not mistaken hope this helps y all besafe :rebel:

ur welcome bubba.and in serial #number will tell u how much it takes my old roator only took 16oz some of new ones take 32oz if im not mistaken.hope this helps y all besafe. :rebel: :rebel:

Rotator takes 24 ounces of gear oil lubricant not 32 ounces.

Redline Shockproof HD has earned a very good reputation in the Rotator.

I'm not seeing where he said it was a Rotator; :scratch: maybe a friend of Jamie's?

I will add that the Redline HD Shockproof works well in any of them.
A Rotator may be the most dramatic from an audio standpoint given the racket
they sometimes make, but it will quiet and cool just about anything you put it in. :wink:

I'll second the Redline. I put it in my Rotator (that had Royal Purple in it) and it is a ton quieter.

We've had good luck with Redline Shockproof as well but Amsoil 190W and 250w have been fantastic as well and the gearboxes in general have run 10-deg or so cooler using the Amsoil. Yes that was a back to back test on the same boat. Redline seemed to breakdown (get thinner) quicker than the Amsoil was the biggest reason we switched from Redline to Amsoil.

Oh and the Amsoil 190w-250w oils are not as thick as a traditional 190-250w oil. They have the viscosity of about an 85-140w oil with the "cushioning properties" of a heavier weight oil.

So you gained 200 rpm? I call BS...you didn't gain that from switching oil...that would be 50-75 horse gain

I changed over to Royal Purple n I can hear my box now I won't ever use it again

If you have ever reviewed and of the lab data where they compare synthetic lubricants you would never use Royal Purple.
Test area after test area it performs poorly in the data I have seen. Usually out of the group of catagories it will achieve a high mark in one specific area but across the spectrum it is sub-standard.

As it relates to motor oils and an average of all the lab tests Amsoil usually comes out on top. In select weights I have seen Lucas, Mobil and Castrol give good performances. I just cant use Royal Purple after seeing that data time after time and DoDo confirms from the field his box is making more noise.

Shane has advised Redline Shockproof HD was good but in their tests Amsoil appeared to be slightly better. Many drives have run a long time on Lucas products as well from reports in the field that I have read.

If a drive is making more noise it's gears are not being cushioned! Dump that shit out today

tony im not going to get in a pissing match with u because ur such a master GURU.how u come up with an xtra50-75 hp where do u come up with that number.and i did gain that around 100-200 rpm.idk what y all say about royal purple but it worked just fine in that old 98 rotator 2.12 and as far as noise i can't hear it im DEAF so noise away lmao.jmo y all besafe :rebel:

The HP increase is a rule of thumb for what would be needed to get those extra RPM results. He's probably pretty close...

The royal purple tests that swamp mentioned are available online and it's no secret that you are essentially over paying for what you actually get in terms of product performance.

See what kind of power it takes to gain 200 rpms...you couldn't gain that with an oil change if your life depended on it..and anyone who would believe that has got to be the dumbest ****** around..maybe going from a 2.55 to a 2.68 with the same pitch you could pickup 200..smfh

While this is very much a "SWAG" on a gear drive one of the keys to the Branch engines living so long is the use of a home brew lubricant.

The Redline Shockproff HD may benefit from the addition of 10 to 20% Lucas conventional stabilizer as you noted a thinner viscosity.

Lucas has advised it is great in gear to gear applications so this may add cushioning and enhance the viscosity a bit.

Think I will test this blend in the near future on an older drive.

Not a bad idea, and the Lucas is relatively cheap compared to some of the other name brand oils. 80% redline and 20% Lucas 85-140 may be a really nice blend. I did find that Amsoil 190w runs within a few degrees either way of the Redline. And the Amsoil didn't seem to breakdown as quickly as the Redline.
