Looking for options to replace my 220

Post by TDezso »

Blew up my 220 yesterday and I'm looking for options for replacement. I was thinking 0-470, but it's looking a bit expensive. What are my options?

When you say, "blew up my 220", what broke? Is it the bottom end or cyls?

there seems to be some 470 birddog engines available right now for some pretty reasonable prices ....problem is most do not come with carbs or mags and that can really add to the cost of a turnkey engine

The word birddog scares me because I owned a 300 birddog and it was very weak in power. That boat taught me all about being stuck.

Well. When I say blew it up, I wish it was a jug or two. Image

Yeah. Wasn't a pretty sound. Starting to tear it down now. Hoping I can salvage enough parts to sell and recoup a bit on a different motor.

wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to go with another 220? I know there is mucho chance somebody will sell you their junk 220, but I am sure there are good motors out there somewhere if you look.
maybe even try some popup pistons or something to liven it up if you need a bit more power.

good luck with the repower whatever u choose!!

I'm looking for a 220 now. All I need is the jugs, block and oil pan. Problem is finding one cheap enough to justify putting a 220 back on and not a 470.

An o470-13 would be closest to mounting as the 220 but prop adapter and such are different and are longer.
I never finish anyth,,,.

Think I'm going to try and pick up an E185 this weekend from Ben Stanley.

Talked to Cecil a bit. He doesn't have anything right now. This is just a little 12' laser. So it'll stay ac till I sell it. Next boat will be ls gearbox. At least I know those motors. Lol.

I'd love to go with an ecotec. I've seen some nasty ones, but it's way out of the budget and time frame I want to have it done by. Lol

Here's a couple pics after pulling 5 jugs off. #1 took out #2. 1 is stuck in the block for now and 2 I had to pull the rod with the piston to get it out. ImageImage
