K&N makes low profile 3" inlet air filters - have you checked their website? http://www.knfilters.com/universal/universal.htm

You can go grab one at Advance Auto off the shelf. Lowest profile I could find.

I was told by an engine builder that these filters would choke a 540 or 520, that they would not flow enough air. Any truth to that? I really need one to keep the dirt daubers out of my carb.

I have a similar K&N filter on my 470, but it is twice as long. It is safety wired to the adapter.

if your main concern is keeping dirt daubers and the like out of the carb and not so much filtering the air I would suggest a spark arrestor set up
