Stupid question maybe?

Postby Mark007 » Sat Apr 14, 2018 10:19 am

I traded my big airboat for a smaller FL boat with a 6 cylinder continental 220 gpu " so I was told that's what it is" and I think I need new plug wires and maybe a new mag thing, I'm no mechanic! Anywho... it runs great but I don't know model numbers to purchase the things I need. There's numbers on engine 534738 and it has the firing order. Does this number mean anything to you guys? Sometimes I think one of the cylinders is not firing because when it sounds good this thing runs great but I can hear when it's not opening all the way and when I shut down there's sometimes black liquid that runs down the manifold. The wires are in bad shape I think, because they're all black in color except one. It's yellow! I just need to know how to order parts but don't know specifics. Thanks in advance! I'm a carpenter not a mechanic

New plugs, wires, check timing and have your mag gone through since you have a single. Where are you located?

Get with GMAC76 on your mag and wires. :thumbleft:

I have a 220 also I run 7 mm solid copper conductor wires and if you have black liquid running out of the manifold if it's the intake you may have a vacuum leak also.

I do have the black stuff coming out a couple of the exhaust manifold. I changed all 2" hose on intake manifold last week.
Is there a way you can give me the numbers of your plug wires? And where can I get some? Tia

Ducarra Aviation, call and order the seals for under the intake tube flanges, if you have oil running out the exhaust flanges, you may have worn ring lands and you are oil fouling plugs, you can slow this by running a qt. of Lucas oil stabilizer with a fresh case of aeroshell, be sure to pull oil screen and clean it, screen is the 1-1/8th hex flanged plug under left mag, be sure cooler plumbing and fittings are at least 1/2 hose.
I never finish anyth,,,.

How much it cost to overhaul a engine like this?

They are simple engines, there are manuals posted on this site, any good machinist can do the valve work, the guide bore is 7/16 so he'd need a stone pilot to grind the seats 45° and dress them with a 30° to get seating width correct to valve face, also once all bores are determined to be standard or p.015, order rings accordingly, also do yourself a favor and find a set of 535133 or 640518 pistons for it, before you buy rings, as the 640518 has Keystone tapered ringands.
I never finish anyth,,,.

I cleaned that screen and the was fine metal pieces in it. Also I gapped the plug of the leaking cylinder a lil bigger. Sounds good on trailer but I'll see in about two hours what she'll do in the swamp

If your oil fouling that Lucas will really help slow the consumption.
