p0087 silverado duramax
p0087 silverado duramax
When going up grade pulling fifth wheel camper, check engine light will occassionally luminate. ODB II code is p0087 https://bestarny.com/duramax-fuel-filters/ . DIC shows "change fuel filter" or engine power is reduced. Fuel filter changed 5k miles ago. Filter tested and within specs. Only happens when pulling load up grade, but doesn't happen every time. Dealer checked truck and told me all diagnostics normal. But still happens periodically. HELP please.

Re: p0087 silverado duramax
Google returned that the issue may be low fuel rail pressure (pump issue)?

Re: p0087 silverado duramax
Pump or fuel lines collapsing. There is a bulletin about 2 lines close to the motor getting worn out and since holding prime is from creating vacuum, if these lines are soft they will collapse when full load vacuum.

You're on the wrong forum.

Re: p0087 silverado duramax
I would run down all fuel lines and squeeze any rubber line to see if soft.
Re: p0087 silverado duramax
I'm sure you got a low fuel pressure to injectors for I got a 7.3 ford with a chip and when I turn the chip up to race and kick it down hard I get an engine light due to low fuel pressure to injectors due to fuel pump and stock fuel lines doesn't allow injector pump to keep pressure due to fuel shortage. I drive normal a few minutes and light will go out till I do it next time. If I have chip turned up and hit a steep grade with a trailer behind it about half way up the hill light will come on also.

Re: p0087 silverado duramax
I am a GM tech. Been working on duramax for 7 years. It needs a fuel filter housing. The housing bypasses causing fuel to go to return side. Also fuel filter life resets to zero. Usually this only happens under heavy load. I’ve seen it numerous times. You can bypass fuel filter and test it. I bet my last dollar that is your issue.
Re: p0087 silverado duramax
I loose prime after pulling a heavy load . Got a new housing hope that fixes it

While I agree filter housings go bad usually you can tell without replacing by hitting the primer bulb on top and seeing if holds prime. If bad you will see bubbles or fuel from wherever air is getting in. Worth a shot but save some time and see if priming bulb is showing signs of loosing prime

Re: p0087 silverado duramax
The filter housing bypasses internally. Therefore you will not see bubbles. If you want to test before making purchase you can take a piece of 1/2 inch u shaped tubing and connect hoses that go into and out of housing. It bypasses housing. I cut a piece of tubing off an old condenser and bent it into a u shape and hose clamp hoses to it.

Re: p0087 silverado duramax
Yeah I don’t know how the bypass would go bad. They sell a rebuild kit for the housing that includes everything that goes bad. Mostly it is the prongs either in fuel heater or primer bulb. That is where you will see bubbles when you try to pump a lot of pressure to it, fuel bubbling out under pressure. If only happening some times under full load and then goes back to normal that does not seem like a loosing prime issue that seems like lack of fuel getting there which sounds like restrictions of fuel. Either way both fixes are relatively cheap so if not one then the other.
Re: p0087 silverado duramax
Thanks I will replace the housing and the lines.
Re: p0087 silverado duramax
I have a ‘04 and got the rebuild kit and rebuilt mine. It would loose prime when parked over night.

Re: p0087 silverado duramax
Never seen anyone properly rebuild the filter housing with success. The filter housing from GM isn’t that expensive depending on year model. I would install a FASS fuel system on the truck and never look back. And a P0087 code is low rail pressure caused by lack of fuel to the injection pump or pump laying down. PM me if you have any further questions

I may have missed it but what year duramax, On anything after 2011 it could be the dreaded cp4 failure.
