Leaking oil from jug

Post by HomesteadSlide »

Bought my first boat a month ago, been out to camp one time and when I got back I noticed some oil residue on the rudders. Parked it in the yard and cleaned the entire engine, 2 days later I have oil coming from a jug running down the case and falling on the half deck, I got the correct wrenches and made sure all bolts were torqued to spec but they weren’t loose. The motor is an 0-360 lycoming with 25 hours on it after rebuild. Looking for some advice on whether to let it eat or have it looked at !

Where from jug could be valve cover , could be the o-ring on the jug to block , could be a cylinder separating

My old boat with a 180 had a head separating which was causing a slow leak as you describe. I replaced the cylinder and that leak was gone, but that oil on the rudders was always there and just kept the bugs from sticking.....lol..

Did it just start doing it? Did you take it out before with no oil problems?

It’s where it bolts to the block, I’ve only taken it out one time and when I got home noticed drops on the half deck. I just bought the boat.

Sounds like whoever built it missed the o ring.

That's what I'm hoping, an easy fix.

not familiar with the O-360 but be sure it is venting ok and not building pressure in the crankcase

He's more trouble than you think, he'll kill your sugar, leave you in the drink.

Its definitely venting, it leaks even when just sitting in the yard. I'm thinking its the O-ring to the block
