Where can I get?

Postby FuelishBehavior » Wed Sep 11, 2019 2:14 pm

Hello all, as I am about as new to airboats as one can get (never even been on one). I am however an avid boater with twin engined go fast boats. I built a tuned down 600 hp 496 stroked big block engine about 2 years ago to use in one of my smaller cuddy boats that I have recently trashed and I'm looking to buy an airboat basically rigged and ready for a new engine. This seems difficult since there are so many engine combos and I know absolutely nothing about an airboat and it's requirements like props, gear reductions and things of that nature. I'm looking to buy something used but in top shape, doesn't have to be too fancy but something solid to mount a good engine to. Any help is appreciated on where to look for something like this or just opinions on the subject? Since I live in TX I thought it might be cool to run around the swamps of Louisiana or something like that if that requires different hull styles and what not?

With a big block you will probably be looking for a hull in the 15ft range. You need to determine what you need from the boat such as running the coast or narrow swamp trails etc. That will help to select the right boat for your need. Knowing your engines specifications and abilities will also help to select the right combination to match the boat to the engine to the gear ratio to the prop to the type of power output needed.

I suggest you watch the classifieds, call airboat shops, check ebay and craigslist to see what is out there for sale. Just don't rush into it and try to find a mentor because this is nothing like powerboating......NOTHING

ps: Watch out for scammers don't forward anyone money without doing your homework

Thanks Swamphunter45. After reading up on airboats I agree with your comment about powerboating and airboating being completely different. I appreciate your comments. I'll just keep asking questions and see if I can find someone around the Galveston, TX area that owns one.

We had several Texas folks get hustled so if you get PMs from someone offering to build you a rig use caution. Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions.

The members on here rarely agree but at least you will get a wide perspective of viewpoints,

I liken it to taking a girlfriend to the gun store.

The girlfriend wants the tiny pink or purple junker .380
Her boyfriend wants her to carry a hi-cap .45 semi-auto'
Instructor behind the counter would probably see she has no experience and suggest a 38 revolver.

Getting a mentor or two is so valuable to help grasp the habits and hazards. Having them take you out for the perspective then ride with you would really be a bonus. Just like flying best not to solo on the first flight...lol
