Suggestions on how to paint GPU?

Post by KRS62 »

While my prop has been sent off to warp drive for refurbishment, the next step from me is to take off the cage, rigging and pull the motor. I don't necessarily need to paint it, but there will be no better time to do it than now.

I don't need it to look like a showpiece but do want it to look somewhat decent. I'll have a pretty good looking prop to mount back on it and want the motor to look decent. I think the easiest approach would be to just sand and/or wire brush the motor down, mask where needed and hit it with a fresh coat of paint.

On the other end of the spectrum it's to pull all the cylinders off, maybe sandblast or wire wheel them and repaint. This will give better access to the case, and repaint that. I don't know that this extra effort is worth it however.

So any thoughts on the recommended approach here?

Since this boat is relatively unknown to me are there any other things I should do while the motor is off? The general consensus so far is to not do anything with a motor until I know I need to.

Thanks!

I pressure cleaned mine, degreased, wire brushed, more pressure cleaning, then addressed areas needing scraping. Then painted aerosol high temp refurb. I’m happy with it. If the boats unknown it may be a good time to pull the cylinders checked the rings pistons valves, clean the carbon re-seal and replace any issues. How much for prop refurb I need to do mine.

Don’t sandblast. Sand gets too many places you don’t want it to. Aircraft paint remover works good.

Thank you for the replies. that motor looks fantastic and exactly what I'm looking for.

I was hoping that someone would recommend vapor blasting as I've been wanting to build a vapor blasting cabinet. But that was more to get justification to build the cabinet, lol. I've seen some of the motorcycle guys turn to that for cylinder refurbishing but yes I don't want sand introduced into the motor anywhere. Especially if it's not needed.

My prop blades were in really bad shape. I think they're pretty much the worst case scenario. It was $800 including shipping back to me. It was a 72-in diameter prop, but because a few of the blades were so bad on the ends they have to shorten it to 70-in. He said they typically recommend that for some of the airboats anyways. I can change the pitch to make up for it. Like always I no there is trade-offs. I'll post a pic when I get them back but here's what they look like now.

Thanks

TY for the compliment. My blades are in need but my tips are good, just few dings, balancing and paint.

Your repair would be much cheaper. Basically it is relative to the amount of damage. Just out of curiosity, what diameter is your prop? I will let you know how mine look when I get them back. I will have a video of it as well on my series.
