Im new to the AC motors and Iv been looking to buy a new boat with a aircraft motor I found one but the guy said he put to used mags on it and he said the motor has been gone threw with a bunch of new parts but the mags are the only thing that's not new he said the boat is running about 80% but it needs to be timed to get it to run perfect I'm a machanic myself so I'm not completely dumb when it comes to spin a few wrenches but the aircraft motor are all new to me I'd like to get some input on how to get the timming at 100% or if I'm wasting my time with it thanks for all the Input hope to see you guys out sliding pretty soon

Id stay away from the o435 personally they are ancient and parts are out of site find u a 540 or even an aircraft 0470 or io520 parts are much cheaper and easier to find

I love the old 0-435 take and cut the case and put 480 cylinders on it strong motor, last one I had built I put 0-320 cylinders on and it is a good motor the bottom ends are indestuctuble and they make 240 to 245 horse power, 60 lbs lighter then a 0-540, poor man's 540

What pistons did you run with the 320 cylinders? The matching ones or the 540 pistons? What's the difference between running the 320 cylinders vs the 480 cylinders? Also do you use wide deck or narrow deck cylinders?

stock narrow deck cyl. 7 to 1 comp. 0-320 same cubic in, as 480 either way jammin motor sold the one with angle vale cyl, to build 540 ended up building another one you needs parts I got a friend who has about everything you need or can get it

there are two types of magneto timing: internal and external. when the mag is assembled off the engine, internal timing is set via distributor gears and rotor cam points opening (known as E-Gap). external timing is set when the mags are installed on the engine and they are syncronized to each other. in addition, at least one mag is an impulse magneto which will change timing when starting the engine. try googleing "aircraft internal magneto timing" and "aircraft magneto timing" and "magento impulse coupling" for more general info.

if the engine has the old and I mean old "lunch box" mags they are really getting hard to find any parts for...if it has been fitted with the 20,200 style bendix mags your in business....... magneto wise at least
