Area 3 fire

A fire that was started in area 3 by lightning has been raging for a week now and last night it was bigger than ever. The few rains did nothing to curtail it's furry. From the roof of Camp Old Glory at night, the glow is as big as many sunsets. :shock: The fire started to the south and has been burning north as I see it from here. I sure hope that none of the camps were lost in the fire. :dontknow: Hundreds (if not a thousand) acres have been burned. The smoke is much thicker than a burning sugar cane field. :violent1: This happens many times when the Glades get dry and it's been said that it is for the best but Sawgrass recovers very slow, so that area will be barron for many years. If any thing, the cattail will have an advantage and is very detrimental to the Glades since it consumes every thing in it's path. :(

Hwy 27 has been shit down due to this fire. Police are diverting traffic east towards pa beach from South Bay. That's a hell of a detour!

Smoke is very heavy even here in Coral Springs. Driving to work this morning, I thought it might be fog until I got out of my truck.
 
Be heading to the keys tomorrow.. We be able to see any of it on the way through?
 
There looks to be quite a bit burnt, from where I'm at I can't tell how much sawgrass is burnt but
The fires up by the levy appears to mostly myrtles
 
I remember a really bad fire in this same area back in the late 80's... It got up under the 500 kV lines and the black (carbon rich) smoke was so heavy they flashed over and arched to ground. Scared the pants off them Forest Service boys running their Bombadiers!!!

I remember one fire that caused a big elec blackout.

That 80's fire may be the one that caused it?
 
Well, I'm not sure about the sawgrass in 3A North, but the sawgrass in 3A South grows 6 inches or more in a week and every fire that has ever came around my camp just cleaned all the heavy dead grass out and within 6 month you couldn't even tell it had burnt... The deer were fatter after them too from all the fresh food! I say BURN BABY BURN... Come to think of it, Everytime I've ran my track in 3A North after burns the sawgrass grows just as fast there... Very possible that the issue with it growing slow is the water in Area 2. I could see that slowing the recovery and allowing cattails to flurish.
 
The problem with SOME burns is when the roots are dry and exposed. That's when the entire plant is destroyed. Also, the muck will catch on fire and then thousands of years of Mother Natures work is destroyed. There goes the ground cover AND the ground AND the wild life. A large area of the fire was doused yesterday by rain but a large area to the north east was not and the fire continues to rage. I can't help but wonder if the deer was able to stay ahead of the fire under constant pursuit.

This fire will likely be all positive.
Only time it was ever bad, as noted, were the marl fires in the late 70's. Burned a lot of high ground and I haven't seen the huge deer herds since.
Like all...Praying no property was damaged.
I also don't believe Sawgrass grows slow. Burns seem to recover incredibly fast. Would like to see the science/facts.
If the numbers they are throwing around are accurate (19,500 ac) that is a VERY VERY large area. Think of a stretch about 8 miles long and 3 miles wide.
 
Left the office about a half hour ago and even with all the rain out there today (had the radar on all day), there's still a lot of smoke rising.

Yes, an area close to 27 is in full fury again. There was a strike in 2A this afternoon but it fizzed out quickly.

Fortunately, I am located in a willow head. Any thing green will not burn unless hit directly.

Better to be safe we have seen this in the past!!! Best to have some gas powered pump and hose to reach all around the camp! Better to have them and not use them then need and not have!!!! Stay safe Gerald. Doug
