And here we have comments to Headwaters from none other than Mr Nathaniel Reed the same gentleman that when at Dep't. of Interior set the stage and lead folks down the primrose path to where we are in Big Cypress today.
Talk about history repeating itself - it sure will if anyone listens to these comments.
Notice not one mention of him supporting any type of ORV use even as associated with traditional Gladesmen activities.
He also refers to "sports hunting".
Folks should call him at 772 546 2666 and explain that hunting and fishing are more than some sports hunting/ recreational activity like soccer, football and golf.
Animals and fish die in hunting and fishing to become food not to win on the scoreboard. That friends is more than mere recreation in my book and hopefully in yours too.
When he states "under proper control" below he may be meaning way more control than u can imagine.
Nothing but "Weasel Words" from a master.

I wish to add my name in support of the 100,000 acre Conservation Area and the 50,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge proposed by Secretary Salazar.
As a former Assistant Secretary of Interior for Fish, Wildlife and National Parks (1971-1977), I know the value of the refuge system.
Having served on the board of the South Florida Water Management District for 14 years, I know that land use along the Kissimmee River and the other tributaries to Lake Okeechobee are furnishing vast amounts of excess phosphorus, far greater tonnage than the lake can assimilate.
I have never been as discouraged in my many years of government service as to the failure of our state’s leadership, its enforcement agencies and its Institute for Agricultural Science to make the extreme effort to control runoff into the ‘waters of the state’. Our great lake, Lake Okeechobee, home of great bass and crappie fishing, waterfowl hunting, and a vital staging area for millions of birds on their southward and northern migrations is in danger.
The headwaters concept is the first major effort to not only control runoff of agricultural wastes but open up within the national refuge extensive areas for hunting waterfowl, deer and hogs.
There is a rumor abounding that the refuge will be closed to sports hunting. The proposal should emphasize in legally binding terms the fact that sports hunting will be allowed under proper control.
The importance of this proposal to insure sports hunting cannot be overemphasized.
The proposal offers the most important positive step toward ‘restoration’ of water quality, water flow, and land protection that has ever been conceived.
We must not lose this opportunity,
I wish to add my name to the supporters of the proposal and congratulate Secretary Salazar and staff for their brilliant concept that must become a reality.

It seems as though Mr Reed is all about Mr Reed and not particularly interested discussing anything with folks from outside his circle up at the higher altitudes.
Probably not an uncommon attitude from high up Dpt of Interior folks. They're high up and full of themselves they incorrectly assume lowly ones like us cannot change the course of the ship they think they are in total control of.
We'll just have to educate them to what Obama said "Yes We Can".

BACKGROUND:
The hearing will examine the impacts of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, a component of the Water Resources Development Act. In 2000, Congress enacted the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan as a component of the Water Resources Development Act, committing to spend at least $13.5 billion for the restoration of the Florida Everglades. To date, none of the 68 projects of the Comprehensive Restoration Plan are completed. Despite the fact that the Fish and Wildlife Service has an operations and maintenance backlog in excess of $3.4 billion, they plan to acquire 150,000 acres of land in Central Florida for inclusion within the National Wildlife Refuge System at a cost of more than $700 million. The focus of the hearing is to examine how the 150,000 acres acquired will contribute to the overall goal of restoring the Florida Everglades, how the Service intends to pay for the 150,000 acres it intends to acquire through fee titles and conservation easements, what assurances they will provide in terms of public access and wildlife dependent recreation within the refuge and conservation area, and how the four locally affected Florida counties will be compensated for lost tax revenues.

Not sure how to post the latest letter from Nat reed where he claims to support hunting but if you read through his manipulative comments you may come to some of my conclusions that he is only stating he supports hunting in an effort to ram headwaters up our tailpipe

"To oppose the Secretary’s bold plan to improve the water quality from the lands that are releasing tons of Phosphorus into the Kissimmee and other lake tributaries is foolish."
My response "In the released plan of the headwaters the plan admits that not much cleanup will occur and that a few miles downstream in the manatee zones there will still have a lot of places to pollute the area the headwaters clean up.
Clean water is definitely a worthwhile goal but the amount of clean water that will be derived from the project is exaggerated unless the Feds are considering all the lands South of headwaters be included which is probably their long term goal."
Also I think he is too soft on the NPCA and does not take a stand opposing wilderness designation of any kind he kind of skirts that and instead of taking a stand opposing NPCA action he leaves it up to the justice department to make the decision. Which makes sense since it is already in the courts but He can’t bring himself to say NO Wilderness was supposed to be in the Preserve
He claims he wants what we want. his or any persons interpretations of what discipline and reasonable controls are subjective not concrete
And his last sentence says it all
He will never forgive those who oppose this refuge.
How can anyone support this refuge regardless of any supposed protective language.
