SANFORD, Fla. -- So far, close to 5,000 evacuees have landed at Orlando-Sanford International Airport and most of them are U.S. citizens and victims of the earthquake, but not all the evacuees from Haiti that have flown into the United States are innocent earthquake victims.

There are reports that a former prison inmate flew into Florida. Eyewitness News was able to confirm that a man wanted in Haiti was aboard a flight that landed in Florida. He's been transported to Miami and is being held in custody.

Eyewitness News also contacted Homeland Security Thursday and some drugs did arrive in an unclaimed bag in the U.S., however it could not be traced back to its owner.

I was out back in the swamp when those military transports flew over my street on approach into Sanford. Some amazing planes. I could not help but to stop and stare at them. They make a jet-liner look like a toy plane.

Glad to hear they got one of the known criminals. No telling how many more there are.

My wife and I were wondering what the criteria was in Haiti to get on one of those planes. It sounds like they are evacuating the US citizens from the country. Is that right? What does it take to board one of those transports in Haiti? Who are they hauling over here????

matt.

Lots of Hams, Amateur Radio Operators are getting hops down there to take radio equipment and set up for health and welfare communications. Lots of other aid groups that are sending more then the airlines allow.

What is amazing to me is how in a time of disaster there is all of this aid available. Don't get me wrong, it is a good thing. But, those people have been destitute for many years. I just think that if all of this aid had come 5 years ago, there might not be as much devastation.

They are still airlifting them into Ssnford.
I've not even been outside all that much today, and already seen 3 of them planes fly over the house.
THEY ARE SOME LOUD MO-FO's!!!!

Here's a photo taken not 10 minutes ago....
Probably just starting to unload at this very moment.

Those are C17s Matt. One awesome medium lifter. Shorter takeoff and landing than the C5 and better maintenance record too. Can also land on unimproved or damaged fields !

Well, 5 minutes before and 5 minutes after these fly in, regular passenger jet-liners are flying the same pattern and these things are a little longer and way fatter than the jets I'm used to seeing around here. If you took the wings off a regular jet-liner it would EASILY fit up inside one of these bad boys! I've been enjoying watching them fly in. And I watched a PAIR of what appeared to be F-16s fly in on approach, looks like they landed in formation side-by-side. Although, Sanford does have parallel runways.

I wish I knew what was happening to the people they are unloading. Are they re-boarding civilian jet liners and flying elsewhere? or are they setting up camps? Since this is so close to my home - I really am wondering!!!

Wait til you see a C5 if you think the C17s are large LOL! They are indeed huge ! The fighters don't normally land actually side by side, one is a few plane lengths in front of the other. I'm sure there are cases where they land side by side, I have just not seen it.

Yes one of the Regional Jets or the DC9s could pull its wings and hide inside the C17 with room to spare. Remember these things are made to haul a several 5 ton trucks or a couple of Abrams Tanks and who knows what else.

Over here we see them headed into Patrick along with the odd C5 and loads of C130s. Fairly common all the time, year in and year out. They do have open house days sometimes where you can walk around and climb in them to see what they are like. You should come over when they advertise it. Don't know when, I havent payed any attention to them cause its so regular.

I'd be surprised if they were hauling Hatians back into Sanford. I'd expect them at the major HUB airports. But then that could be WHY they might be hauling them into Sanford. It IS an Amtrack Stop right?

Might be a chance to activate all these Prison Bases we keep hearing about. A dry run now would help smooth out their operations when they come to put us in them. :)

I'm not sure they could haul 2 M1A1 Abrams at once. I've had to pick a few Abrams up here in Iraq and they're HEAVY SOB's. According to the my military rigging book the lightest M1A1 weighs in at 147 thousand pounds and some change. Though I've yet to pick one that light. They're closer to 155+.
One thing is for sure the C5's are badazz. I had to load all kinds of stuff onto airforce pallets to go inside those suckers and they can take one hell of a load. I'm not buying two Abrams in a C5 though. I could be wrong, I don't know their payload. They also use these huge Russian Cargo jets over here. I don't know what their called but the are pretty big and they seem to fly in more regularly then the C5's did. Of coarse the base I'm at now only has a helo pad. Which is nice! The jets, helos, umav's and planes kept the run way going 24/7 at my other base. Kind of hard to sleep for the 1st week or so, then you get used to it and sleep through mortar attacks LOL

Moodfood i work right on lake mary blvd. One of the closest buildings to the airport (invacare) and everyday when we go out on lunch or a break we sit in the parking lot and it never fails that there are border patrol cars hauling a$$ to the airport, 5 or so at a time, several times a day.

Those huge Russion Cargo planes are the Antonov 225 I believe. They are actually a bit bigger then our C5. The Russians were initially contracting them to the Aussies during the earlier part of the war. They seem to be a bit more powerful than the C5 and MUCH quieter. They also have the capability of opening the nose AND the tail for roll-on roll-off loading.

These Military planes are hard to compare to commercial liners because of the difference in cruise speeds. While the commercial airliners normally cruise at just over 500 MPH, these heavy lifters are seldom cruised over 400 maybe 450 MPH. Fatter body and skinnier airliner body. Different wings as well. One for speed the other for heavy lifting.

C-17 is 170,900 lb

CX-X (C5 Pre Production Developement Version) had a gross weight of 550,000 pounds. a maximum payload of 180,000 lb.

The An-225 boasts a payload of 551,150 pounds. The 225 is not designed for unimproved runways, nor short takeoff and landing. Weight wise, the 225 can pack up a fully loaded C5 and fly away with it.

Here is a pic of the C5 for those wondering

We used to sit and watch the C5's landing and taking off all day long up near Macon, they were flying in/out of Warner/Robbins AFB. I love that place. They are some amazing monsters for sure!

Yobee, drive past Invacare often coming to and from my place out here, and think of you are somewhere in there. That's a pretty big plant. Interesting you see so many border patrol vehicles going to the airport. Maybe they are hauling US citizens, but some illegals are sneaking in with them. But they could be RETURNING there - I think the border patrol has offices there - it's an international airport.

Scotty, no, AMTRAK does not service the airport unless via shuttle bus. Although, the AMTRAK auto-train terminal is about 8 or 10 miles away. I suppose they could just bus passengers over.

My neighbor tells me that the sanford airport used to be some kind of military airstrip before it became the "Orlando-Sanford International Airport". And they are still set up to handle the large cargo planes. But I'm not so sure that's the reason they are coming here.

Maybe I'll just go up there and camp out with binocs for a couple hours when these planes start coming in again and see for myself what or who gets off them. :)

If they are actually bringing Hatians in there, I would guess its the elite business and politicians getting a free ride.

Yeah mood im in the back welding LOL! I got the white 4 door frontier out front with the SA sticker on the back window, its always backed towards the road!
As far as those border patrol cars, its usually cars, not hauling people even, just a driver? Sometimes a passenger. We sit out there on our breaks and lunch everyday, and have never seen em until this started going on! I have been hearing that they are only bringing over "citizens" or kids being adopted etc etc... but it makes ya wonder.
