WHICH PAINT FOR ALUMINUM AIRBOAT?

I was wondering what types of paint everyone uses to paint their airboats. I am going to repaint mine and was looking for options. Any suggestions? Not a fancy paint or paint job just a good durable paint. Thanks
 
Any good paint will work the trick is the primer, you must have good primer to adhere to the bare aluminum. So if your current paint is sticking well then sanded it prime and I like Imron or Aluimgrip but the 2 part Sikkens also works well for a home job you can shoot the base and then lay the clear as long as you do it within 24 hours. If you have to go back to bare metal you should etch & alodine then prime same as the above. Have fun :D :D
 
I've always had great luck with Dupont Vari-prime. Worn the paint clean off of hulls and that primer is some bad a$$ stuff! :shock: :D
 
Make sue you get some alum acid wash first!!!! After you acid wash it the primer is what is important!! I used a two part dupont primer that has to set up for 15mins before you shoot it. After that you can use almost any paint you want and it will do great.
 
All good info! I use coil cleaner from an a/c supply house. It's 8 bucks a gallon and will make 50 gallons., and is some bad a$$ stuff. Any aluminum prep from an Auto Paint store will cost you alot more than that. Alodine would be great to do also after the acid wash, but is very hazardous stuff. Atleast what we used at the space center was. Any of the primers listed above are good. But the acid wash is prob the most important. Remember the last coat of paint is only as good as the first. Do your prep work good and you'll have a paint job that'll take a beating.
 
Are you guys talking about the entire hull? including the inside? some paints can turn out to be really slippery. any advice on that?
