Gear Box Dowel Through Prop

Me neither kwan, but I am a first time CM guy so I want to make sure I didn't do something stupid that no one mentioned. All my experience has been with car/truck transmissions where the dowel holes are blind on the transmission/gear so they can't come out.

Sooo, just to ask/answer the obvious question, "Why are Airboat gear box dowel holes through drilled vs. blind?"

I learned this part a while back starting with a locked-up engine. Car/truck torque converters/clutch include machine threads and a bare minimum of access where a racoon can get all the bolts out without rotating the crank. But the Airboat gear box kits include spacers, washers, nuts and bolts that require access to both sides. With the engine locked up, the through drilled gear box allows for pounding the dowels out so the gear box can rotate and all 6 drive-plate to flex-plate bolts can be removed.

The setup I have with the 8 Qt Camaro oil pan is worse. It's easiest to pull the oil pan to access the drive plate bolts/nuts.

I'm all friggin ears for a better way!
On my boat you can take the starter off and put the bolts in one at a time in the flywheel and spin it around .i have a 418 water thunder . I have also had the dowel pin fall out also and hit the leading edge and dent the back deck

I got the same, it's 6-7 starter pull/replace or one way I found to feed them in versus starter off, pry bar etc. etc.

All fun and games until the engine is locked up. I'm gonna solve the Dowel issue my way, welcome to follow. Not even a dent on my radiator expanded metal protection from this hit, it was all lotsa oil out the vent can for sure!
 
You know my thoughts, the cylinder issue created a harmonic vibration.

Just had a dead injector took a few runs to find it. I am embarrassed to says that I thought the motor was running good.

Developed a crack in my rigging and found 4 bolt in the bottom of my boat after one short run. There were actually five bolts the 5th ruined a ledging edge and is never to be found.

Harmonics destroy parts/ things you wouldn't expect.

I'm sure we all here know that a knock sensor pulses out voltage at the resonance of detonation and spark knock, I'm curious at what frequency it starts to generate a signal and might that signal be amplified to pick up harmonics? But to what extent? Something to the likes of an AFR gauge?
Kinda takes me back to the old timers that only ran an oil pressure gauge and swore against tachometer and don't dare run CHT gauge as it will just scare you.
 
Makes sense I guess, having a Stewart Warner dynamic balancer in the garage and a digital scale to read a feathers weight.

Knock sensors are high frequency sound sensors (not in use on my rig) and would not capture the lower frequency of interest chasing engine speed. Accelerometers would be most optimum. I looked into accelerometers briefly but didn't want to spend the money it would take for a science experiment. I thought about the accelerometers used in phones, but they are limited to about 100 Hz. A couple of microphones and a recorder or even an I-phone recording and I can pick up the signature of a miss.

I'm with 1 Eye here, I am positive the engine mis created vibration that caused the dowel to vibrate out, but that's not a reason not to solve so it can't come out again. With the air ride on this rig, I didn't feel any of the vibration, the only way I knew things were not right was the tach, that and the blow by.

I was thinking oscilloscope lol, accelerometer, out of my league as well, a warning light for multiple cylinder misfire in the programming? Dunno, having a hard enough time doing DIY zinc plating to rusty clecoes and vice grips.
 
The bill is in, $817 for the repair and return shipping, another $50 to send them and it's like it never happened.

Still gotta make sure it never happens again.

Is that for all 3 blades or just one?

That was for repair of the full set. Two blades had leading edge damage.

This probably deserves its own thread, but the 3 flavors of LS accessory drives is BS. The truck drive is the worst, it sticks way out. It's Ok under the hood of a truck but not turning 6,500 behind someone you love.

The Vette setup tucks it all in like it should be. Hard to do it justice, but the truck harmonic balancer on the right is scrap.
