Looking for mower recommendations!

I am in the process of buying a new place with a little property. I was wondering what everyone would recommend? The property is a little over 4 acres. Sould I get a zero turn or just a regular rider? I have heard some of the better brands are scag, exmark,and gravely. It seems some manufacturers have problems with the hydro trans. Looking for what would be a good size cut also. The property is mostly grass but some trees. Not really limited to a certain size to squeeze between stuff. Just don't want to get something and find out it sucks! Thanks, Randy
 
Scag makes a 48in zero turn that is designed for the homeowner, add gas and go requires no greese. change oil and blades, thats it. I have had it for 5 years and not 1 issue.
 
I got tired of buying craftsman and john deere mowers every 3-4 years and stepped up to a gravely 48" zero-turn commerical mower 4 years ago. I now mow about 7.5 acres in 3 1/2 hours with trees and grass mixed. Used to take 8-9 hours. Blades and gas so far... Best $8k spent after all the $2k junkers!!!
 
Thanks guys. I had a feeling it was the freedom z model. I have heard good things about the gravely also. It is a lot of money to spend for sure. But like you said papa jack better than buying a new mower every couple of years!
 
Dixie chopper....my first choice
I have ten acres mow 5-6 takes 2 hrs to do a good job on my 60 in WORE OUT chopper.

Check out the bad boy ztr.....heard good things about them....and much more economical.
 
i have 3 exmark, 2 60" and 1 52". the oldest one is 10 years old, basic maint and wear items...no pump issues to date and they cut great and climb these nw georgia hills just fine. have owned dixie chopper also and would recommend them as well
 
Dixie chopper is the Lexus of mowers,,, No problems, fast, clean cuts, no cut over needed,,, My friend has one

and it is awesome,,, We bought them about the same time and I have worn 2 JD and a Husquavarna,,, I'm

buying a Chopper next,,, Zero Turn,,,

A friend bought a Gravely that was rearended by a car, the 18hp v twin was destroyed and frame was tweaked, I straightened the frame put a Briggs flat head opposed 18hp, upgraded the stator for the electric clutch, been running 8 years now doing lawn svc.
 
zero turn, no matter what one will cut your mowing time in half!!! And alot more fun, so much that my wife love's to do the mowing :cheers:
 
I have a Toro 42" mower to cut just under 1 acre. It has lasted 7 years, occasional minor repair. Howerver, don't get a Toro for 4 acres. Up here we only mow 4 months a year. I would check with the professional lawn maintance companies in your area, ones that have been in business for minimum of 10 years, and see what they are riding. Not only will they be using something fast and reliable, but parts will be available when you need them. Bud
 
I cut on a 33hp diesel Kubota zero turn 72" deck it will knock some grass down!! And cuts just as good at full speed as half speed as long as the grass isnt terribly long. No problems yet but only had about 150 hrs on it.
 
Thanks for the heads up guys. I think it is gonna be between the gravely and scag. Probably gonna get 48" -52" I think that should be big enough. Not looking for a commercial mower. Just looking for something that is gonna last a while. The dixie chopper is probably gonna be out of price range. Plus I heard prices for replacement parts are crazy! Just what I heard! Randy, no matter what brand you go with, just make sure to avoid a stamped desk. The sand we have in Florida eats them for lunch. My gravely has a very heavy welded deck showing no signs of wear after 4 years and is the mower of choice with most of the lawn maintainence companies around here. ppj
 
Yep, look at a Bobcat fastcut pro, semi commercial, (heavy welded deck, best hydraulics, kawasaki engine, donalson air cleaner), about a 100.00 per inch of cut. I have a 48",(4800.00), for 3yrs and love it.
No problems whatever.
 
Check into a Ex-mark Quest, they are a home owners model but built like a commercial model, a friend is a lawn equipment mechanic and told me not buy anything else. It,s 5yrs old and never had a problem, even has original belt and I cut an acre every 5 days. :thumbleft: :rebel:
 
SCAG's are some mean zero turns and last forever. Dixie Choppers are some good zero turns as well. IF I had the the money, I would choose a scag first then look at a Dixie Chopper. They are both good mowers.
 
Anything Scag is a beast!!! Scag is to lawn maintenance as the Ford Crown Vic is to the taxi cab business.
 
Walker mowers are the best in my opinion. Pay attention to what the commercial lawn guys run and you will see a lot of them. They have the best cut in the industry. My brother-in-law has run nothing but Walkers since the early 90's as a commercial lawn guy and he still runs some of his original mowers with thousands of hours on them.
