Looking for mower recommendations!

Get an Exmark. I use a 52" deck Kohler EFI mower for commercial, suspension seat. No problems beside the safety b.s. that every mower has. I would stay away from Scag, doesn't mow when wet due to bad placement of electronics. Dixie is plane jane. Exmark is rated for over 5 acres an hour. Mine mowes at over 10mph, I've cut 10ft grass with it. The only problem is they are heavy, any zero turn will weigh over 1400 ilbs. So wet saturated soil and you'll sink. You probably can get by with the middle brand Exmark. There is a special from Sheffield finance for 0% financing for 48 mos.
 
nobody uses Scag commercially, mostly I see Exmarks, Dixie Choppers, Toro. Go to the dealers and ride them all. I've used Exmark for over 10 years, and my brother is still running one that has been beat on in the foreclosure lawn business. Sat for years and fired right up. My Dad uses a Scag to mow and it just can't keep up with the other brands. Maybe it's because I am comparing different classes. The Scag will be fine as a residential mower though, just now commercial.
 
All mowers mentioned are good, it comes down to the old ford, chevy battle, to say nobody uses Scag commercially is just stupid, you can drive down the road and see every brand mentioned on a lawn service.
 
I have a 52 inch exmark that I bought used with 400 hours on it. I cut 1.5 acres with for 7 years now. Have had very few problems. Biggest problem was deck rollers didn't have enough support. Changed the way they were mounted and that took care of the problem.
I would rather have a used commercial machine than a new home owner model.
 
captrndy--- What brand you buy is important, but how "strong" the dealer in your area is also very important. Parts, product knowledge and willingness to help you!
 
I would say a zero-turn all the way,
OR, If you have a four-wheeler and want to save a bit of money,
Buy yourself one of those tractor pull-behinds & Attatch it to your 4-wheeler,
We did that out here in Florida for a couple years until we decided to buy a tractor. ;D
 
Spent 9 months working in a landscaping shop when construction stopped here. Best mower I have seen is a Hustler, got one will cut at 12 mph and pull a wheelie for 10 yard 34hp. Scags are good but a lot of proprietary parts. Emark very basic mower will also last. Dixie Chopper is also a high end mower with a lot a Proprietary Parts. I would not buy a toro, sears, cub cadet, Snapper.
 
Been using three Gravely commercial grade units four about 5 years with no issues other than normal maint. We also have a great dealer right down the street so that's a plus. The biggest thing our dealer says is do not wash your mower when done, just blow it off with leaf blower and park it. He says people that wash them after each use have twice the problems with bearings and bushings going out.

Which ever zero turn you get, follow this advise. I leaf blow my Scag Z 52 at the end of every mow and it still looks like new. Takes 2-3 min and is the best PM you can do. Can't understand someone that just spent 2-3 hours on the mower and can't take 2-3 min to keep it in top shape. If you have to wash it, only use the hose without any sprayer and a towel.

IMO the Scag Freedom Z 52in is the best homeowner mower on the market, priced right but 100% a commercial mower. 52 inch deck fits in tight spaces, easy to load/unload on a standard utility trailer and makes a good cutting path every pass.
 
look for service in your area someone close and dependable i have run them all i like the gravley best then scag and exmark dixie is good also but you don't want to travle far when you need a part
 
Good topic, just curious out of all these mowers which one has stood the test of time? They all seem to be good choices, but if one of them has been around a long time and still maintains a good reputation and still produces a good product then that would be my choice, providing it was competively priced...
 
i have a hustler 54 w/ a kawasaki engine. had it for over 5 yrs now and have had nary a problem outside routine things like changing the oil, sharpen/replace blades etc.. have even mowed some serious crap that truly needed a bush hog.
 
I do com. Lawn maint. I mostly.run dixie chopper my oldest machie is a99 model yr 25horse 60 inch cut and i have over7000 hrs on this machine with just nomal maint. I recently purchesd a used 60 inch hussler from a local dealer with only 200 hrs for 3500,00 machine works great . My suggestion would be to cheack with your local commercal lawn mower deler and see what thay have to offer in used equipment . Some bigger companys trade out every 2 years and there equip.ent is still in good condition.
